The industry does a great job of convincing you that perfumery is the domain of the great noses born into the Grasse tradition. Or you can't be a professional perfumer unless you have been hand picked by the big perfume schools in Paris.

I know how hard it is when you don’t have all the pieces of knowledge to allow your creative juices to flow.
You start to think “perhaps I don’t have what it takes” or that there must be some mystery bit of information that the industry perfumers have that you don’t.
Trust me on this - once you get it, it’s like a lightbulb has been switched on – you don’t need a chemistry degree to make great perfume.
You can train your nose and become a perfumer without being born into it or having a chemistry degree.
It takes practice and dedication but with the right tools and guidance you can create your own fragrances for fun AND profit.
Once upon a time perfumery WAS the domain of the big industry perfume houses.
BUT
The industry is changing and consumers are tired of the generic fragrances being churned out by big corporations – now is the time of the artisan who intuitively creates from their heart.
When I Started Out In The Fragrance Industry
There really wasn't an easy way to learn perfumery - even for me.
It seemed like it would take forever!
Sure there was some structure but most was intuition and trial and error.
When I started teaching product making workshops after writing my first book, loads of people ask if I would teach them perfume making.
So I decided to figure out a system where I could get a beginner from ZERO EXPERIENCE to creating a finished perfume in 1 day using raw materials (rather than pre-made fragrance oils or bases)
I decided if I was going to teach, it had to be the real deal not some paint by numbers workshop.
I wanted to get rid of the smoke & mirrors in the perfume industry forever and pull back the curtain.
The first workshop back in 2011 was nerve wracking but I pulled it off and the first 11 students went away happy with their creations and were eager to learn more.
I thought if I can get them that far in 1 day how far could I get them in 3 months - and that's when the idea for an online course was born.
The first online course was launched in 2013 and has been updated and refined ever since with hundreds of students going through the programme. Many of whom have gone on to create their own brands.
Hi, I'm Karen Gilbert
I love sharing what I know and have the unique background of having worked both inside the fragrance industry as well as inside the natural skincare industry since 1990.
I have developed and delivered training for companies as well as my own students and built 2 profitable business both on and offline. I have no affiliation with any company and I will always be 100% transparent and truthful – no fluff guaranteed!

Do you provide a materials kit? What do I need to buy to do the course?
I’m not a materials supplier so I do not provide a kit myself (due to extra costs involved and difficulty in shipping worldwide) nor do I recommend you buy lots of materials before you start the course. Here’s why: when you start out in perfumery there are some basics you will need but there are lots that you might never use. The online course comes with a list of recommended materials and suppliers but I suggest you buy just a few things from the list to get started. As you progress in the course you will instinctively know what you want to try. Buy based on what you want to create, this will save you money in the long run and ensure you don’t have bottles of stuff gathering dust.
Other than that, a small set of scales plus smelling strips and mixing bottles are all you will need along with the base of your choice. I recommend people start by using cosmetic grade denatured ethanol (perfumers alcohol) but you can also use an oil base if you wish or one of the other perfumery diluents such as IPM (iso propyl myristate) or DPG (dipropylene glycol)
How much time will it take?
The course runs over 14 weeks with a module every 2 weeks. Each module is approximately 1.5hrs of video lessons (some modules are more, some less) and a workbook to complete. This means if you want to keep pace with the course you have 2 weeks to do each module. The exercises vary and are things that you will keep repeating over your years of perfume making (creating accords and training your nose for example) so there is no rush to get everything done in the 14 weeks. Remember the more time you put into doing the exercises, the more you will achieve so it is completely up to you. Watching a video and reading information will not make you a perfumer. Study plus practice will. You have lifetime access to the materials so you do not need to keep pace with the course if you don’t want to.
How can I learn perfumery online?
Perfumery is both theory and practice. The course is set out to give you the tools you need to do your own practice at home. The lessons are theory plus guided exercises for you to do. I can guide you and show you the way but you must commit to doing the practical yourself. The private Facebook group is always available for questions and the live Q&A’s are set for you to ask you questions live. I also run live workshops throughout the year that are good companions to the online course.
What If I can’t attend the live calls?
No problem – you can submit your questions for me to answer live, the call times will vary so we can cover all time zones.
I'm not on Facebook, Can I sent you questions by email?
Unfortunately not. All support and the live Q&A calls take place inside the secret Facebook group so that they benefit all. It is completely private and the easiest way for me to support a large group. I am unable to answer questions privately. Many people have set up an account just to interact in the group and use Facebook for nothing else. If you do want 1 to 1 advice then you can book a skype call with me for an additional fee outside of the course.
I just want to make natural perfume, is this course for me?
The basics of perfumery that I will be teaching are the same for both naturals and synthetics. Whether you want to create 100% natural perfumes or commercial fragrances using aroma chemicals this course is for you. A large percentage of my students have natural perfume businesses. Even if you do want to include synthetics, I would suggest that you start with studying naturals first so that is what we focus on mostly. Many students go on to use synthetics too and I am happy to answer questions on anything inside the Facebook group.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes of course – there are payment plans available.
Here is how they work:
In order to help spread the cost of training, we sometimes offer the option of a no-interest payment plan where you sign up to have a set amount deducted from your card each month. By agreeing to this and beginning the payments you are committing to paying all future installments until the balance is cleared. This is not a credit agreement, membership or subscription service.
Please make sure you can afford to make all payments before signing up
If for any reason your payments are not made then you will lose access to the entire course, including Facebook Group, until the whole balance is paid. You will not be entitled to a refund of any payments already made if you do not make further payments.
Payments are taken automatically by our card processor each month and it is your responsibility to ensure you have enough funds or credit limit on your card to cover payments or to let us know if you foresee a problem.
Do I get a certificate?
Once you have completed the course you can take an online test. If you get the answers correct you will get a certificate of completion.
