When I started out in the fragrance industry...
THERE REALLY WASN'T AN EASY WAY TO LEARN PERFUMERY... until now
Whilst I got lots of industry training the "professional qualifications" were still very restrictive and as someone on a low income with a mortgage to pay I couldn't just take 2 years out to go to perfume school (even if I could have afforded the tens of thousands of ££ in tuition fees) and besides I didn't speak French which was the only option in those days.
It wasn't until I started working for Neal's Yard and they asked me to create some fragrances that it hit me - I had the knowledge but I hadn't put it into practice.
Because I bought into the industry myths I thought I "wasn't qualified" and so didn't use the stuff I'd learned. Suddenly I was being asked to make a fragrance and I just had to crack on and do it.
It was scary and I doubted myself but I had no choice to to take action.
And guess what......everyone loved what I created and some of the products went on to be award winners.

When I started the course in 2017, I knew borderline nothing about fragrance, other than the fact that I was hugely interested by it. I learned a lot about botanical ingredients during the course, since that's the starting point of getting familiar with aroma chemicals. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions, if your question isn't covered please email support@onlineperfumeschool.com and one of the team will be pleased to help.
Do you provide a materials kit? What else do I need to buy?
I’m not a materials supplier so I do not provide a kit myself (due to extra costs involved and difficulty in shipping worldwide) nor do I recommend you buy lots of materials before you start the course. Here’s why: when you start out in perfumery there are some basics you will need but there are lots that you might never use. The online course comes with a list of recommended materials and suppliers but I suggest you buy just a few things from the list to get started. As you progress in the course you will instinctively know what you want to try. Buy based on what you want to create, this will save you money in the long run and ensure you don’t have bottles of stuff gathering dust.
Other than that, a small set of scales plus smelling strips and mixing bottles are all you will need along with the base of your choice. I recommend people start by using cosmetic grade denatured ethanol (perfumers alcohol) but you can also use an oil base if you wish or one of the other perfumery diluents such as IPM (iso propyl myristate) or DPG (dipropylene glycol)
How much time
will it take?
The pre recorded training modules are delivered every 2 weeks over the course of the first three months (The programme includes approximately 35hrs of video lessons with 6 x workbook to complete - some modules are longer and others shorter) The exercises vary and are things that you will keep repeating over your years of perfume making (creating accords and training your nose for example) so there is no rush to get everything done as soon as a module is released. Remember the more time you put into doing the exercises, the more you will achieve so it is completely up to you. Watching a video and reading information will not make you a perfumer. Study plus practice will. You have lifetime access to the materials so you do not need to keep pace with the course if you don’t want to PLUS 1 year of Zoom calls and support inside the Facebook group.
I just want to make natural perfume, is this course for me?
The basics of perfumery that I will be teaching are the same for both naturals and synthetics. Whether you want to create 100% natural perfumes or commercial fragrances using aroma chemicals this course is for you. A large percentage of my students have natural perfume businesses. Even if you do want to include synthetics, I would suggest that you start with studying naturals first so that is what we focus on mostly, using the synthetics, isolates and Biotech materials to create special effects. Many students go on to use synthetics too and I am happy to answer questions on anything inside the Facebook group.
How can I learn perfumery online? & What If I can’t attend the live calls?
Perfumery is both theory and practice. The course is set out to give you the tools you need to do your own practice at home. The lessons are theory plus guided exercises for you to do. I can guide you and show you the way but you must commit to doing the practical yourself. The private Facebook group is always available for questions and the live Q&A’s are set for you to ask you questions live. All calls will be recorded and you can submit your questions if you can't make it to the calls live.
I'm not on Facebook, Can I sent you questions by email?
Unfortunately not. The live Q&A calls take place on Zoom and the recordings are posted to a private podcast feed so you can listen back. They are also streamed to the secret Facebook group so that they benefit all and you can tag me there if you have any questions. It is completely private and the easiest way for me to support a large group. I am unable to answer questions personally via messenger or email. Many people have set up an account just to interact in the group and use Facebook for nothing else. If you do want 1 to 1 advice then you can book a private Zoom call with me for an additional fee outside of the programme.
Do I get a certificate?
Once you have completed the course you can take an online test. If you get the answers correct you will get a certificate of completion.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes of course – there are payment plans available. Here is how they work:
In order to help spread the cost of training, we sometimes offer the option of a no-interest payment plan where you sign up to have a set amount deducted from your card each month. By agreeing to this and beginning the payments you are committing to paying all future installments until the balance is cleared. This is not a credit agreement, membership or subscription service. Please make sure you can afford to make all payments before signing up. If for any reason your payments are not made then you will lose access to the entire course, including Facebook Group, until the whole balance is paid. You will not be entitled to a refund of any payments already made if you do not make further payments. Payments are taken automatically by our card processor each month and it is your responsibility to ensure you have enough funds or credit limit on your card to cover payments or to let us know if you foresee a problem.
